On the night before, December 12, 2005, a welcome dinner; prepared by Mr. Anak Pattanawibool and WCS officers was offered to all participants. Then, Mr. Anak Pattanaviboon greeted and welcomed all participants to the workshop meeting, also welcomed Mr. Preecha Chansiritanon to deliver speech. After that, each participant introduced themselves. The participants comprised of officers and representatives from several associations; such as, National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department; Protected Area Regional Office 3, 12, and 14; Khao Nangrum Wildlife Research Station; Huai Khakhaeng Wildlife Sanctuary; Eastern and Western Thungyai Naresuan; Joint Management Protected Area (JoMPA) Project; Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Science of Kasetsart University, Mhidol University, and Chulalongkorn University; Seub Nakasatien Foundation; and, Western Forest Conservation Club. Besides, WCS officers Ms. Amy Vedder Ph D., Mr. Peter J. Clyne Ph D., and Ms. Etienne Delattre, also traval aboard to joint the workshop.
The workshop started by explanation from Ms. Amy about the conservative thinking procession and world heritage site management based on wildlife section, which has been developed by WCS and was applied to reach its succession in several countries. Also in this workshop meeting, the conceptual model was refereed and proposed.
The conceptual model was initiated by the fact that all wildlife species require area for living, feeding, and descending their species. Each species require different habitat; Umbrella Species (large carnivores) such as tiger, leopard, raptor, etc., require large and variable area for each territory. Consequently, the conceptual idea of wildlife landscape reservation leads to the idea of focusing on selecting landscape species which can be the representative of each landscape, so that we can scope our study to its direct and indirect threats, also can identify our objectives, intervention, and monitoring process to reserve them. We can say that, the succession of reserving the selected species means to existence of the landscape where they are inhabit.
Before noon of the first day workshop, each participant was assigned to proposed 5 selecting landscape species for the world heritage site. Then the MC collected all, totally 33 species were proposed.
In the afternoon, participants were arranged in groups to brainstorm for selecting species assessment and to propose in general to compile as of each group.
After dinner of the same day, Ms. Amy presented and described along a slide presentation of Gorilla reservation in Rwanda as to share experience on conservative task. The struggle and endeavor of scientists and conservationists of the Gorilla reservation project in Rwanda among several obstacles and hard burdens deeply impressed all the audience.
December 14, 2005, participants have to work harder for whole day as that will note to everyone’s memory. To considerate all direct & indirect threats and its intervention in details as each group was assigned took very long time to reach their conclusion. Until late evening, the conclusion from each group was presented in general and all of them appealed several additional opinions from the others.
December 15, 2005, the workshop was lasting to the final day that all the participants have to brainstorm for monitoring process following independent plan of each group which has been verified during the date before. The group workshop went very well following main schedule, then the representative from each group present their submitted direction of monitoring process to be discussed again in general.
Finally, the workshop completed on 12.30 pm when Mr. Anak Pattanavibool reported the workshop result that appreciatively reach its objectives by well cooperation from all participants. Then, Ms. Amy revealed her impression toward the cooperative workshop. Also, she was really gladded to be informed about advancement of conservation field in Thailand which is more than many countries she had previously visited. Mr. Chatchaval Phitdumkham; Manager of World Heritage Project in Thailand and the Chief in Command of Huai Khakhaeng Wildlife Sanctuary emphasized the important of more using scientific application to support conservation task and world heritage site management, also applauded the workshop as the best he have been attended. After that, the priest Noppadol; the chairman of western forest conservation committee in 6 provinces, who just long traveled from Kamphaengphet province just to attend the workshop blessed to all participants before the workshop was ended.
Apart from positively result through its aim, another by-product gained from the workshop was an opportunity for participants to exchange idea, opinion, and experience on conservation field, as Ms. Amy said; “We were talking about biodiversity and ecosystem, and on this meeting you can see several scientists and experts from several fields. So, this is the diversity of workshop’s participants.”
The workshop will not be positively completed without efficacious staffs from WCS who set back supporting all necessity; such as supporting documents, translations, food, and accommodation services that participants were all impressed and they can rely on efficiency of WCS teamwork.
By their dedication on preparation, cooperation, budget, etc., for the workshop. The “Framing of conservation work and world heritage site management for Huai Kha Khaeng and Thungyai Naresuan based on wildlife section” was finally initialed by acknowledgement and experience of researchers, scientists, conservationists, and all concerned officers reflecting the speech of WCS (Thailand): “Saving wildlife and wild lands through careful science”
