During 14th - 19th May 2006, WFCC traveled for the mission of food and drug support to Thungyai's rangers, along with the co-missions of West Thungyai wildlife monitoring meeting by WWF , radio system & solar cell system maintenance support at Thungyai, and equipments & food support to Thungyai central radio communication station. The food and drug donation supported by WFCC members who donated and delivered to WFCC office at Nakornprathom. The arrangement and separation for each unit supported by Young volunteers of the Whale Gang who made all stuff in order, for easily distribution.
After Mr. Keng loaded all material onto WFCC truck, the journey started at around 2 am, headed to Keongsada wildlife protection unit. We reached there by the time the sun rose upon the peaceful Runtee river.
After morning coffee, we continued to Sanepong wildlife protection unit and met Mr. Ling and Mr. Narong who was on duty at the checkpoint. We were reported that the solar cell and radio communication system were in function and all instruments were still in good condition. However, the major problems are contradictory between rangers and villagers about the protected area and agricultural area which tended to be more gradually crucial. Another problem is garbage pollution problem. They reported that even garbage bags were offer free with ranger's request for cooperation, the problem increasingly found caused by increasing number of tourists who lack of nature & environment consciousness. Moreover, instead of tourist toilets provided, tourists prefer to use office toilet without taking off their shoes and that caused more cleaning task to the rangers especially when it rains. WFCC therefore consider and discuss to provide additional toilets for tourist which the project will be issued to consult with Mr. Urb Cheong Sa-ard later. Food and medicines were handed to the rangers before WFCC left Sanepong to Kohsadoeng , another wildlife protection unit along its way.
To drive from Sanepong to Koh Saderng unit was the first time experience of Mr. Keng, WFCC technician. He learned several techniques to control the truck in different challenging condition of the southern route if Thungyai, not for fun but for his full responsibility on all passenger's lives. Driver's responsibility and driving skill in several condition with safety and to achieve the destination is extremely important to each mission of WFCC. From the historical first truck "Iron Heart" to the second existing one along the past decade, WFCC truck drove several hundred thousand miles for hundred missions alone in west Thungyai Naresuan without help of other trucks. When the old hard-work truck got stuck or malfunction, WFCC driver together with all passenger on it need to brainstorm and sometime to force by our physical strength all alone, unlike most tourists who visit in group of caravan trucks. Even how much troublesome or how many problems along the route are chasing, WFCC fought them betted by succession of each missions.
After lunch with Kohsadoeng rangers and Mr. Tool Suwan; the head of Tilaibha unit, WFCC donated food and medical supplies to Kohsadoeng unit and then continued to Tilaibha where is 36 kilometers up north to national border of Thai-Mayanmar. It was raining when we drove uphill and that took much more time to get through. We reached Tilaibha by the time the sun just down.
After the meeting of West Thungyai Wildlife Monitoring by WWF, WFCC staff handed food and medical supplies to officer of Tilaibha before headed to Langka Wildlife Checkpoint in the late morning of May 16, 2006. The medical supply comprised of five most wanted dosages. All supported by Dr. Anothai. It was luck of Mr. Supoj, a ranger of Tilaibha, that WFCC arrived there by the time he was suffering from diarrhea, and one of what we carried can cure him from the illness.
Fortunately, after many days of heavy rain the, the stream level was continuously decreased. We decided to continue the way before it start to rain again. This was the first time of Mr. Keng experienced to drive through the flooding Kasat stream which was basic essential and beneficial for his future driving responsibility the same path as Mr. A and Mr. Koh (WFCC drivers) had previously passed.
At Langka wildlife checkpoint, we again met the volunteers from Jakae Village Wildlife Conservation Group who participated the meeting at Tilaibha on the day before. We together joined lunch and and traveled back to Jakae Village. WFCC replaced solar cell instruments parts and fixed radio transceiver unit then handed food and medical supplies and one new solar cell battery to rangers at Langka wildlife checkpoint, Mr. Ong and Mr. Taxi, before continuing the way.
Before we reached Jakae village, we met Mr. Amnart, the ranger of Pujue wildlife checkpoint, who rode motorcycle from the opposite way. WFCC then handed him food and medical supplies to take to the checkpoint. By Mr. Amnart, we were informed that, during that afternoon, some Thungyai patrols met clues of poachers. He was ordered to contribute the troop at Sesawo wildlife protection unit, and will also join WFCC to Sesawo in the following morning.
That night, after sending the volunteers of Wildlife Conservation Group to Jakae Village, WFCC continued to Jakae Wildlife Protection Unit. Mr. Taiza, Mr. Pling, and Mr. Serh were on duty at that time. During the night time after dinner, I laid awake almost the whole night thinking of Mr. Pranuch and some Thungyai's patrols who accidentally met the armed poachers today while they were during the 16th wildlife survey mission, and concerning about their security.
In the early morning of May 17, 2006, I woke up and rush up Mr. Keng to finish the solar cell system check up and instrument parts replacement for Jakae unit. After breakfast, we handed food, medicine, and other necessary utilities to Jakae rangers before hurriedly drove to Sesawo, together with Mr. Amnart and Mr. Jorh. When we reached Maekasa unit, Mr. Keng hurried up his mission and handed food, medicine, and other necessary utilities to Maekasa ranger; Mr. Thung. We rushed off to Sesawo wildlife checkpoint after the completion of solar cell system check up and solar instruments parts replacement with another additional ranger, Mr. Jote from Delu unit to reinforce the troop against the armed poachers.
At 2 pm, we arrived Sesawo wildlife checkpoint and were reported the situation by Mr. Phanom; the head of Sesawo unit. WFCC handed food, medical, and utility supplies to Sesawo rangers, and other patrols who reinforce and stand by at Sesawo unit. WFCC left all other passengers but Mr. Jorh there, headed to the central radio station upon Hermit hill in order to state a 900 liter stainless drinking water tank which supported by Laihonghuad shop, a construction material store at Nakornpathom. Also, WFCC handed food and medical supplies, together with some additional radio communication accessories. Then, we left Mr. Jorh to take turn the duty at the radio station and took Mr. Ae return to his section at Maharaja Wildlife Protection Unit. WFCC headed to Maharaja as to repair the damaged under part of WFCC truck.
4:05 pm during the way at Talerserh hill, we were reported via radio that the patrol troop met the poachers and had a collision, and the geographical position was informed. I decided to stop the truck there and reported to the Thungyai central radio station that WFCC truck would stand by there in case of emergency need for WFCC truck was the only truck in the wildlife sanctuary nearest to the position.
By the time we stood by among the continuous rain in the forest, the concern of the such serious crisis push me thought back to other several historical incidents that continuously occurred in this world heritage site during the past decade WFCC has worked here. All the images of fighting, people, conservationist, etc, returned and each scenes of those incidents seemed still clear in my mind. Silence through the two hours of waiting made me terribly anxious. Until ten past six, the radio man reported from Thungyai central radio station that the patrol troop already withdrew from the battle site and all were saved. I felt much relief after the news and all anxiety during the past two hours were gone. I reported to cancel the stand by and headed downhill across the high water level of Dongwee stream to Maharaja to hand food, medical and utility supplies following our planned mission.
