Stage#4 phase1   December 23 - 28 , 2004

                 December 23 , 2004
Mr. Anothai helped packing necessary medicines into boxes which would be delivered to 18 wildlife protection stations and 4 wildlife checkpoints , after 3 hours all 15 items of medicines were ready packed with the instruction usage . The medicines was donated from friends and supporters of WFCC which was always in need by the rangers . When  all stuff was loaded into the back of the truck then we started off at 23.00

                December 24 , 2004
We arrived at Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary at 6.00 am. , After 60 blankets and 23 boxes of medicines were unloaded at the head quarter office we continued the journey . We had our lunch at Maharaja wildlife protection station and picked up 3 more rangers with us to help working at the Hermit mount . Before sunset we were at the top of the Hermit mount and helped preparing the bottom of the 8 holes which would be filled with concrete in order to support the radio station poles . When finished we headed to Sesawo wildlife protection station which was 4 kilometers away , the temperature gradually reduced to 15 degree Celsius when the sun had set .

December 25 , 2004
We were woke up in the early morning by the noises of some gibbons and school of birds living near by , it was still cold so we gathered around the fire and had our morning coffees . When we got our breakfast , we were separated into two teams , the first team stay working at Sesawo wildlife protection station , continuing building a service house which to be used as wildlife research station  in the future . Another team went up to the Hermit mount continuing concrete base construction for the radio station . The concrete base preparation was a laborious work , we mixed up sand and stones with cement and water on the hill top , put it in the plastic buckets , walked down hill and poured it into all 8 holes . We had our lunch on the mount with the food we prepared in the morning , in the afternoon the work gradually kept on its progressiveness until the late evening . 1,000 kilograms of sand and 1,000 kilograms of stones as well as 500 kilograms of cement was used to filled in all 8 holes that day , when the mission was completed , we cleaned buckets and tools then carried to the hill top just before sunset . We discussed about the success of the mission which paved way for the next mission that will come in next month . The next mission is to construct the radio station in 4 days which  is a challenging task for us , the structure of the radio station is made of iron which is to be cut in pieces and sent to this hill top for the construction .

We walked down the mountain and jumped on a truck to Sesawo while the last light of the sun was at the horizon . When we arrived , we all went to the stream to take a bath for we all were dirty from the concrete work and some got concrete bites . Then we joined another team which was busy building wall structure for the wildlife research station . The wall structure needed another day to finish and wall building need another 1 - 2 days to be done .

                 December 26 , 2004
We were woke up by the birds and gibbons as yesterday , the morning temperature was about the same as the day before . We had coffees by the fire to get the warmth , after breakfast Mr. Jitti and Supakit , the rangers , drove a truck down back to the head quarter to get more sand and stone which will be used to build the floor of the wildlife research station . The rest joined Mr. Un and Lek helped building wall structure of the wildlife research station .  The workers were split into two teams , Mr. Un leaded one team and Mr. Lek leaded another team , the work grew slowly but steady due to the difficulties of frames structure cutting and the zinc line cutting that support the Sherra wood ( imitate wood used to make wall ) for there were 6 windows and one door .  And when the sun went away , though the work was only half finished , Mr. Un stopped the generator , then we went to bath in the stream in order to escape the cold which usually came as the sun disappeared .

While we were bathing , Mr. Jitti and Mr. Supakit returned with a pick up full of sand and stone which will be used to build concrete floor of the wildlife research station in the day after tomorrow . After dinner that night , Mr. Jitti recalled me that today was the wildlife day which was one of the most important day for the rangers and wildlife , though the night was cold , the rangers celebrated their wildlife day by singing the old wild songs around the bonfire by Sesawo stream . It was another value experience to see the real rangers life of Thungyai , beside the legends and old  stories of the wild were recited from the elder rangers and naturally absorbed by the younger rangers , the way they alternately expressed their wills to protect and conserve nature and wildlife through their short speeches and songs was very impressed and permanently stamped in my memory .

                  December 27 , 2004
Mr. Jitti got up very early , 5 am ., though it was still dark and cold ( approximately 10 degree Celsius ) , he had never escaped his responsibility of taking care of his brothers which he long practiced for decades, preparing food and breakfast for the young rangers every morning . I was intentionally woke up by the cooking noises from the kitchen hut which was made of bamboo instead of the gibbons and birds as it was still dark which was not their time yet . I discussed with him by the charcoal stove that we would continued the wall building by installing Sherra wood to the zinc line support which was going to be finished by today and Mr. Jitti and Mr. Supakit should drove the truck down back to the head quarter to get more sand and stones for the concrete floor of the wildlife research station as yesterday .

After breakfast , the work went as planned , the Sherra wood was piece by piece lifted up and attached to the zinc line support by screwing . The difficulties was meaSuring and cutting the Sherra wood to fit the frames of windows and door , same as yesterday . Nevertheless , before the last light of the sun disappeared from the sky , the wall building was completed as well as 2 iron shelves assembly . The iron shelf was designed and produced from Nakhonpathom and carried to Sesawo to be assembled in order to help store equipments and construction tools which was highly demanded from all wildlife protection stations near by that supplied by WFCC .

Mr. Jitti and Mr. Supakit returned again with a pick up full of sand and stone just a quarter after we finished the work . During dinner we discussed that the floor construction of the wildlife research station should be started in the early morning so that we could finish the work before noon and had time to go back in the same day . The night was still cold as other nights so we went to bed and slipped in the sleeping bags to get the warmth .

                   December 28 , 2004
5 am. Mr. Jitti was the first who woke up followed by Mr. Supakit , while morning coffee was preparing , other rangers and volunteers were woke up by the wild morning songs sung by Mr. Supakit . We started the floor work in the dark by the light of the torches , though it was still cold , all workers helped mixing concrete with enthusiastic . After 3 hours , the work was done and ended the mission of this trip . The wildlife research station is another project of WFCC to push the wildlife sanctuary to start its own wildlife research which will be of great benefits to the academic and study of wildlife knowledge of the sanctuary in the future . The knowledge of wildlife research will be displayed at the wildlife sanctuary exhibition halls at Maharaja and Tinuay which are under WFCC patronage and shall enhance nature awareness of Thungyai Naresuan wildlife sanctuary among tourists and visitors as well as the public to be more environmental concerned and more cooperated in conservation activities both in Thungyai and all other forests .

We left Sesawo at 10 am. and arrived at Maharaja by noon , we each had a bowl of instant noodle as lunch . We met Mr. Tawat , assistant to the chief in command of Thungyai , he informed us that , there was a news  of Tsunami in the south of Thailand , hundred people died . I was not get used to the word Tsunami and had not much knowledge about it though I had heard of it before , thinking of one old friend , Mr. Tiwa , who lived in Phi Phi island and wondering how he was while droving the truck back home .

2 pm. I was at Thong Pha Pum , on the way back to Nakhonpathom , a cell phone rang updated me that thousands of people died from Tsunami in the South , Mr. Tawet , WFCC chairman , ordered me to rush back to WFCC office and he would come to pick me up heading South to Phi Phi island with Mr. Nok who was on the traveling from Cambodia border to WFCC office in Nakhonpathom in order to help and rescue a friend who suffered from Tsunami . I drove non stop back to WFCC office with the thinking of the friend of us wishing him alive and safe .

I arrived at WFCC office by 6 pm. and started off to rescue a friend from Sunami in the South as soon as Mr. Tawet and Nok arrived .
