Stage #5 phase 2 June 18 - 21, 2005

During June 18 - 21, 2005:  WFCC successfully transported and installed 2 panels of 2X4 meters of glass doors of the central radio network station through the most terrible track of Thungyai during the beginning of its rainy season.

It was 7 pm. of June 18, 2005. After Mr. Punya had delivered steel shelves to WFCC office, Mr. Pranuch took over the materials and firmly fastened 2 panels of meter 4 x 2 glass windows to WFCC truck. To load such sensitive materials, especially glass, need to pay much more concentrate. Mr. Pranuch tried to find out effective wrapping method and materials to protect bumping during transportation on such rough road with difficulties of Thungyai Naresuan. Until after 12 pm, all materials, equipments, and foodstuffs were completely loaded, readily to leave.

2 am of June 19, 2005, WFCC truck stopped at Mr. Pued’ s resident at Amphur Thalor, Kanchanaburi province to pick up generator. The generator had out of order during the previous mission on April 2005. It was already repaired by Mr. Pued. The second stop we took at Maharaja Wildlife Protection Station to take Ms. Maew, the cook.

We reached the head office of Thungyai Naresuan around 8 am. It seemed quiet that day since Thungyai, at that time, was closed and tourists were not allowed to get in. Regularly, Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary takes a period of rainy season to stop service for tourist, in order to let the forest recover itself. During the distance, we met Mr. Booonchai, followed by some rangers and Mr. Mana, the ranger of Huay Kue Wildlife Protection Station, came from opposite direction, transporting foodstuffs to support Huay Kue.

WFCC hurriedly continued the way; however, we took Mr. Pae, Mr. Suthas, and Mr. Sert back to Tikong Wildlife Protection Station as well. When we reached Tikong, Uncle Sanom assigned Mr. Pae, and Mr. Too to support the stage 5 mission of glass window transportation & installation. During the way, Mr. Pae and Mr. Too had to get off the truck many times to remove the barriers of fallen tree.

Before we reached, a little hairy worm found. Mr. Pranuch kept record and took photos for reference. When we reached Maharaja Wildlife Protection Station in the late afternoon, we found a barking deer laid waiting, and a green snake gazing suspiciously. The radio officer from the Central Radio Network Station at Hermit Hill reported of the heavy rain at that time. Therefore, WFCC decided to stay overnight at Maharaja.

June 20, 2005 after breakfast, WFCC; leaded by Mr. Chitti the head of Maharaja Wildlife Protection Station, continued the distance to Hermit Hill. Along way, Mr. Pae and Mr. Too still getting off the truck many times to remove the tree fallen by heavy rain the night before. When we reached Dongwee stream, Mr. Pranuch and Mr. Surachai separated to continue the wildlife track survey which has been done progressively.

The trace is more terrible as we got through the forest, deeper puddle with slide clay. Mr. Chitti, the driver, needed to be more concentrated to pass through each barrier. When we reached Talerser stream, Mr. Chitti asked to put chain on back wheels to clamp the rail easier. WFCC truck controlled by Mr. Chitti carried the two glass windows uphill carefully. At Mor Phong hill, Mr. Chitti needed to wind the truck from deep puddles and avoid large stone up to Hermit hill.

2 pm., WFCC finally reached the Central Radio Network Station. At that time, Mr. Bow and Mr. Eey was in duty of radio officers. Both hurriedly came to carry the two window grass to the radio station and installed. Then, WFCC continued to Sesawo Wildlife Protection Station to deliver some equipments and foodstuff to support Sesawo rangers. Also, we intended to stay there for a night. During the way, a tweezers bolt was accidentally slipped off and gone, caused the back axel and tweezers separated. Mr. Chitti solved the problem by modifying a timber into T-shape to support axel temporary. Fortunately, the modification was effective as that we could take further 500 kilometers to Nakornpathom safely without any further accident.

June 21, 2005, we left to Maharaja Wildlife Protection Station, and picked up Mr. Too at the feet of Hermit Hill since he had stayed that night with Mr. Bow at the radio station. During the way, we were informed to pick up Mr. Pranuch and Mr. Surachai, the surveyors, at Songsong stream. WFCC truck stopped for lunch of instant noodles at Dongwee stream and wait for the surveyors at appointment area. At Maharaja, we met some WCS officers who came for Hornbill Survey Project. Thus, we took a chance that night to discuss and share experience of conservation works in a warm friendly atmosphere.

June 22, 2005. After WCS officers left for their mission, WFCC started the journey back. We picked Uncle Sanom out to do his business at his home in Kanchanaburi, together with Mr. Surachai who intentionally went out to find some spare part of mow grass machine for replacement. We reached Kanchanaburi around 7 pm. with heavy rain. WFCC driver drove back to Nakornpathom carefully; concerned of the modified T-timber supporting the axel will get damage or slip off. However, we finally arrived the office safely.
