Tiger radio collar repair support

Khao Nang Rum wildlife research station
Huai Khakhaeng Wildlife Sanctuary

February 25, 2006, a radio collar was taken back to Khao Nangrum Wildlife Research Station after repaired by WFCC.

Radio Collar is such potential instrument Khao Nangrum Wildlife Research Station currently used for Tiger Research Project. The radio collar batteries capacity can last several months or over a year on field site.  However, a great pain of such electronic equipment is when after the batteries expired or used up. The specific high voltage batteries it requires is not generally available in Thailand market, so Khao Nangrum Wildlife Research Station needs to import which costs very high expense and takes too long time. To solve the problem, WFCC tried to source for a 3.6 volt capacity high voltage to replace and reconnect the circuit, then the function was tested before covering by resin as its own original. After the repaired radio collared was returned to its owner, WFCC demonstrated its function and described all the maintenance process to Dr. Dave, together with Mr. Saksit; the head of Khao Nangrum Wildlife Research Station, and his staffs.

It was a great chance WFCC ever met Dr. Dave, an expert of tiger research field, during the mission. Dr. Dave was at  that time during the mission of Khao Nangrum tiger research project, and was going to travel back for a conference at US in March which Mr. Saksit was also invited to participate. WFCC, together with Dr. Dave and Mr. Saksit, discussed and exchange each other experiences toward conservation tasks.

Besides the acknowledgement of tiger research field, Dr. Dave revealed his experience through his field work in India when he was severely attacked by a rhino in 1998. Fortunately, he was then rescued in time by his true friend who had delivered him to have surgery at Samittivech Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. He continued, during waiting for the operation at the hospital, he met a Thai technician who came for air-conditioner maintenance in his ward. The air-conditioner technician was informed about his injury, so he offered him a necklace with hanging Buddha Image and said “You will never be attacked by animals anymore”. Dr. Dave hung it around his neck since then, and never be attacked again as the man had prayed for him. These occurrences of being rescued in Thailand and the spirit of friendship of that guy mad him to be fond of Thailand since then. After that, he showed the operating scar and the hanging Buddha Image he referred.
