Wildlife Tracks Survey #9 Mission

24th July 2005. We walked along track no. MHR03 which general condition was mixed deciduous forest. Started from Maharaja wildlife protection station at over 1,000 meters from sea level, our destination was Stone Gate of Wildlife Track at southeast of Nong-klang-thung (a swamp in heart of field) which we yet never success on having its record because of its troublesome conditions; high glass field on large open mountain ridge with several complicated deep valleys.

While we were approaching Nong-klang-thung, Mr. Sombat raised his two fingers folded to our direction and then placed on his head as a sign of sambas at the swamp. Then, he raised his four fingers to sign their amount. We carefully crept up to see the four sambas and found they were a mother sambas with her kids walking to eat grass around the swamp. After they sensed of us, they slowly walked away.

Nong-klang-thung is a swamp in a high narrow mountain ridge which is wealthy in rainy season but only clumps of grass remains in dry season. We rested beside the swamp, and the same herd of samba returned into the swamp without any fear of us.

Sky turned to be clouded and started to be rain in the afternoon. We decided to walk south for a kilometer and then cut across at eastern to shelter a deep valley at center of the mountain ridge. Unfortunately, we missed the direction because of error GPS and wrong estimated on the distance. It was our remarks that "No return but go ahead to find a new thing even in a wrong way". So, we had to walk along the valley's ridge. Sometimes we had to climb up and down the valley. However, it gave us some useful information of how a mountain ridge's valley in dry dipterocarp forest retain water and how it originate water resources. Moreover, we found several clues of wildlife laid in the valley.

Because permanent error of GPS, during the the patrol since then we could not catch any geographic position but leaded by compass and map. The continuous rain caused us could not take any photo, the last one of this mission was a lonely arc cycad leaning by continuous wind which was standing at edge of the mountain ridge.

By estimation from compass, we were nearly approaching our destination but we could not find it. In contrary, we found a large track headed to eastern. We decided to follow the track and, finally, it was a new thing we found. It was the first obvious large track lays across from western to eastern as well as the landscape of Nong-klang-thung.

Along the track was totally bamboo forest, no any grass field founded. For wildlife, this condition was only for traveling, bamboo shoots might be found only in some seasons. Although we did not reach our destination, we got a new value target for next mission.
