During the meeting with Mr. Saksit Simchareon the head of KNR wildlife research station and the advisor of West Thungyai Tiger Research Project (which has begun since the beginning of 2005.), WFCC reported general progression of the wildlife track survey project The on-going project as collected by Mr.Pranuch during past months. In conclusion, the project is continuously progress and keep going as following Mr. Saksit's instruction.
After the the brief of WFCC, Mr.Saksit added some suggestions regarding the field operation of the wildlife track survey project and showed the patrol data sheet which had been developed by Dr.Anak from WCS. The form will be used for wildlife data record and assessment at Thungyai as the same standard as being practiced at Huai Khakhaeng WS. as to develop future GIS data.
In the same meeting, Mr.Saksit showed the radio collar used for tiger's tracing, one of the most expensive wildlife research equipments valued over ß150,000 which had to be imported from US. This equipment is necessary for tiger research project and WFCC wonders if we could produce by ourselves as to save budget.
Mr. Lae, assistant to the head of KNR, collecting wildlife carcasses specimens such as; skulls, horns, hooves, hairs, scats, etc., to clean, record all the details, contain in appropriate wares, and keep for further study and research. Mr. Lae is one of the crews of Mr.Saksit who is very skillful on wildlife research and he is a significant staff who helps driving forth wildlife research projects of KNR wildlife research station at Huai Khakhaeng WS. to be effective and progress.
After meeting, Mr.Saksit leaded us to inspect the area where we have reported via radio network of a samba carcasses hunted down by a tiger. During the inspection, Mr.Saksit gave a short lecture describing tiger's ecology to enhance our understanding.
By its clues of fangs and claws including footprints, Mr.Saksit assumed that the predator was a leopard. He added that, apart from guar and banteng, samba is also a large prey of tiger in Huai Khakhaeng WS.
