April 1, 2006, a preparation meeting of West Thungyai tiger research support project was held by WFCC members and volunteers at Whale Hotel, Nakornprathom. The meeting committee was informed the progressive of the western Thungyai tiger project which is under responsibility of Khao Nang Rum (KNR) Wildlife Research Station. The research was during wildlife tracks survey as database for trapping camera installation which is planned to process in the end of this year. Thungyai Naresuan is the second site for KNR tiger research project after the first at Huai Khakhaeng WS. Since March 2006, Western Thungyai Naresuan officers and rangers whose participate the project gradually traveled to Khao Nang Rum to have technical and on-site training by Mr. Saksit Simcharoen, the head of KNR Wildlife Research Station. Tiger research project was initiated in Thailand in the past 3 years, and continuously worked out by the dedication of Mr. Saksit Simchareon, with the consultancy of Mr. Dave; an expertise of tiger research. Moreover, the project is under cooperation with National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department (DNP), and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand who has been gradually supported; especially on training and educational field. Huai Khakhaeng, the Thailand first Tiger research site nowadays has an appreciable useful database of tiger population. In Huai Khakhaeng, 40 Indochinese Tigers is now identified. There, progressive techniques were developed and set in function. Trapping camera installation and GPS transmission radio collar were used. Also, the systematic on-site wildlife clue record is provided. These effective technologies and processes are also provided for the tiger research project at West Thungyai Naresuan WS.
The preparation meeting began after Mr. Anuwat Jaisue read a poem to WFCC members and volunteers. The poem composed by Mr. David Butler during his Thailand visit on February and March 2006. Then was the tiger research project report; prescription, resources, working procedure, finance, etc., including presentation by Mr. Pranuch about some sample techniques for tiger research project, tiger ecology, and geographical information system (GIS) of the progressive wildlife tracks information in West Thungyai Naresuan he had colleted from his on-site survey and record during last year.
In addition, on the 4th April 2006, the West Thungyai Tiger Research Support Project was presented to Mr. Erb Choeng Sa-ard in order to report the on-going project and ask for further cooperation. On this regards, WFCC presented Thungyai’s GIS database which WFCC under cooperation with Thungyai Naresuan WS has been worked out through wildlife tracks survey project since the year 2005. And, the developing Geographical Information System will be then initiated as Thungyai central database for general usage after its completion.
