27th - 29th April 2006, the camera cabinet installation turned to be a basic procedure. The next I named it "Drive Forth Process". It includes cameras performance inspecting and planning tiger's prey investigated area. To inspect cameras performance is to check the total number of historical usage, record, monitor infrared level, check its function and adjust or change if it's not work properly.
To plan tiger's prey investigated area, we will investigate following wildlife trails where each set of camera was connected. Prey investigation is to survey prominent clues such as; tiger spray (urine) on tree trunks which is to sign their territory. The left picture above there's a man inspecting whether tiger spray with specific strong coconut oil smell. And, another one on right picture above is metering the height of spray clue from ground, metering and identify the species of tree, find geographical position or waypoint, and record.
Another territorial sign of tiger is mostly found along the road or wildlife trails. It is scrape which has two shape; I-Shape and V-Shape. In case we find scrape, we will have its width and length record, as well as will have pad width, toe width, and toe length from its pug marks. In case of scat found, also we need to collect all as to inspect about their kind of food since some wildlife fraction such as; hair, bone, claw, etc. are indigestible. Scats and pug marks of large animals we mostly found were of Asian elephant, banteng, guar, wild boar, and red muntjak.
30th April - 2nd May 2006 was time to separate for each camera performance inspection. Several interesting and funny stories were told after our return each day. A team caught a wonderful photo of a beautiful banteng. I only caught photos of isolates guar with a White-winged Duck which was brought return to nature as to revive its population here. The duck often flies to bath on Khakhaeng stream both in morning and evening time.
Someone may suspicious how could we live in wild. It was only us, over ten guys stay together and took turn to be the chef. Not only tiger expert, also Mr. Yang is an excellent chef. Huai Khakhaeng and Thungyai team shared experience of each primitive herbal food, as well as each local intellect and cultural heritage on medicine. Our exchange on such topic shall be a wonderful relaxation each day. The Operational Training now and then therefore includes acknowledgement and understanding about tiger, working procedure, attention, physical and mental strength, and love on what we were doing. Many people here may not good at expression but I can feel it in their eyes.
