In the early of 2002, Mr. Paiboon; the Chief in Command of Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, invited WFCC to visit Huai-Kue Marine Wildlife Checkpoint which sank down to Maeklong River. On this opportunity, WFCC had studied Maeklong’s ecology, also its important roles as one of the 3 sources flows to Srinakarin dam. In addition, WFCC had learnt the problems and obstacles of Huai-Kue marine wildlife checkpoint on preserving this area, along Maeklong River.
Huai-Kue marine wildlife checkpoint was originally established to protect smuggling on board along Maeklong River, which separates Thungyai and Huay Khakaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries. Regarding Paiboon’s request, WFCC agreed to support restoration since WFCC realized it’s important, and WFCC foresee that the marine wildlife checkpoint could utilize both Thungyai and Huay Khakaeng. Not only protects this unique world heritage from poachers, the Huai-Kue Marine Wildlife Checkpoint also supports long-term recovery and expansion of ecosystem in large area.
On February 17, 2003, the floating marine wildlife checkpoint was handed over to WFCC which was drew to the Western Fresh Water Fisheries Subjugation Center, then put it as one of WFCC project. After that, the restoration was begun. The work side area and electricity supported by Mr. Suvit Kachasigh, the head of Western Fresh Water Fisheries Subjugation Center, Mr. Prasert Marksup, the assistant, also good cooperation supported by all officers. The renovation budget was in a total of Baht 120,000, schedule to be completed is 30 days. Construction designed by Mr. Tawet Uttawichai, the senior architect (Wutthi Architect). The total area was divided into 3 rooms; one 3x6 m. used as central office, and two 3x3 m. used as dwelling for officers.
On renovating process, steel plates were used to repair damaged floor and 5 steel pontoons which were steel structure inside. (Another one pontoon previously used was removed since it was too deteriorated to be repaired.) Steel floor and building, together with zinc roof were applied from their original structure and materials. Steel window frames & door frames, together with slatted glass window were supplied for every room. There are altogether 3 water-proof door panel. The front room was opened to install pulley canopy with panel. Behind the building was pantry area with open-air sanitary room constructed. The building was surrounded by steel pipe handrail with 12 tyres surrounded to support bumping on the base. The interior floor applied floor mat. The pontoons and steel base structure underneath covered by rasting paint. Walls and ceiling applied light green, and doors with doorframes covered by plastic emulsion. Besides, WFCC had supported some additional necessary equipment that are; antenna with antenna pole and a 40 Watt solar cell system installed over the rooftop, an emergency light installed at front roof, fluorescence at the backside. Moreover, electricity & solar cell control circuit was installed at the front wall, together with a 40 Amp spare battery for solar cell, and a 10 Watt Icom IC2000 car communication radio with its accessories. To make the checkpoint ready for use, WFCC had support maintenant for Huai-Kue’s marine engine which had been drawn and damaged. Moreover, WFCC offer a 100 amp watercraft battery, 3 inner tyres for a float, 2 mattresses, kitchen utensils and other implements, 250 litre diesel, also the pictures of King Rama V and King Rama IX for Huai-Kue officers to pay homage.
The renovation project was well completed due to hard working of Mr. Visith Samarnvanich, WFCC chairman of the year 2003, the project manager, Mr. Tewet Uttawichai, architect & consultant, Mr. Anuwat jaisue, foreman, Mr. Terdsak pattarawani, supervisor, Mr. Umphon Thapananitikul, transportation and coordinator, and, the technicians Mr. Nathee Pattarawani, Mr. Natre Klinchu, and Mr. Chaipat Ngiewchiyarat. Moreover, the project would not be successfully done without supporting from Companies, Laew-Paew Group, and Mr. Niwat Sridanchai, the head of Huai-Kue Wildlife Protection Station. Through the renovating process, we suffered from several problems. However, our strong will to dedicate on work, including truly support from all concerns encouraged the renovation to finally reach the completion. Significantly, the most empower resource is what all the partners have in mind; faith and hope to preserve the beauty and wealth of Maeklong River and natural surrounding, including the connected jungle area to be, for a long time, exist and saved from all threatened.
Ultimately, WFCC would also like to thank you Mr. Paiboon Sawetmalanon, at that time the Chief in command of Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary who had been taken a great action on preserving this natural world heritage throughout his duty, and, especially thanks for his invitation caused WFCC took responsibility on such this great burden. Also, thanks for Mr. Pairoj Khempunya, at that time the Chief in Command of Huay Khakaeng, who offered a great liability for WFCC to take participate on protecting the Western Forest Complex of Thungyai-Huai Khakaeng Natural World Heritage. May the Hermit and all guardian spirits of Thungyai Naresuan, including spirits of the passed away conservationists help protecting the rebirth marine wildlife checkpoint to be durable and powerful from now and forever.
